Chios mastic

What is mastic

Mastic is a natural resin produced from the tree Pistacia lentiscus var. chia. Mastic plants are evergreen and live for over a hundred years, while in order to be able to give mastic, it takes at least five or six years from the day they are planted.

Mastic trees exist in many parts of the Mediterranean, but only in the southern part of the Greek island of Chios, they shed their precious tear, the mastic of Chios.

So, although these trees can grow in other parts of the world, mastic comes mainly from trees grown in the southern part of Chios. Mastic, which is well known for its antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties, is a unique product of the geographical area of Chios island.

Benefits of mastic

Numerous scientific studies claim that the use of mastic can bring a variety of beneficial effects on our health due to its high antioxidant and anti-inflammatory action.

Chios mastic helps in skin inflammations / skin wound healing. Chios mastic essential oil seems to have antimicrobial properties against bacteria as well as pathogenic microorganisms. Scientific evidence shows that mastic has antimicrobial activity against different strains of bacteria and types of fungi. In particular, in vitro data have shown that mastic may have a protective effect against bacteria that may cause mucosal and dermatological infections in humans, such as Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Proteus vulgaris, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and C. albicans.

Mastic has been used successfully in cosmetology, due to the fact that some of its substances have antioxidant and anti-aging properties.

Skin care with mastic products

By applying mastic cleansing products, you take full advantage of the anti-inflammatory properties of mastic.
The face is exposed daily to a variety of aggravating factors (dirt, grime, makeup, excess sebum, etc.), which makes it even more necessary to use mastic-based products to gently remove dead cells and harmful substances, and to reveal a smoother, softer and more hydrated face.

Anti-aging properties

As a resin produced by mastic trees, it contains terpenes (mainly oleanolic acid), substances with anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activity, and polyphenols, powerful antioxidants that protect the cells and tissues of the body from free radicals.

Free radicals as we know are responsible, among other things, for the aging of the skin. In short, its antioxidant action is very basic for any anti-aging treatment, which is why it is included in a wide range of products that aim right there: to reduce fine lines and wrinkles, to slow down cell damage and to promote a more youthful complexion.

Acne is essentially an inflammatory “outbreak” of the skin, while our sebaceous glands (the glands that are responsible for balancing the skin’s oils) are affected by bacteria. Chios mastic can lead to great improvement in this regard by having a certified anti-inflammatory and antibacterial role.

From ancient times, hair masks with Chios mastic have been the “hidden” secret for hair care, for multiple symptoms: hair loss, dryness, and dull hair.

Today, this has become more scientific, the necessary emphasis has been placed on valuable components of mastic – such as ursolic acid and its isomer, oleanolic acid – and the right products have been created with the right proportions and optimal composition for strengthening hair growth and protection against irritation of the scalp.

All this, together with ideal synergies (such as olive oil, argan oil and much more) can give the most impressive result in a short time. Bathe and give a gentle massage on your head, foaming your favorite shampoo. Then continue with conditioner, a dry oil or hair mask and find out how the hair gradually strengthens, and its growth increases, while the hair acquires a silky shine, breaks less and radiates health.

Teeth, gums

The world’s first commercial Chios mastic cosmetic released in commercial packaging was the Masticdent gum toothpaste.

Since then (early 1980s) the medicinal properties for the benefit of the sensitive area of the mouth has appeared to the general public, and it continues to this day to hold the first place among the natural ingredients of protection and hygiene of teeth and gums.

After all, even clinical research of the Department of Pharmacognosy of the Aristotle University has shown that it can lead to a reduction of microbial plaque by up to 41.5%! Equally encouraging results are found in international studies such as the research of Alev Aksoy, Nizami Duran, Serdar Toroglu, and Fatih Koksal, which showed that Chios mastic fights the streptococcus mutans bacterium in carious prone people who receive orthodontic treatment.

You can find Masticdent toothpastes in three compositions: whitening (the world’s first toothpaste with mastic that combines natural ingredients whitening teeth without damaging their enamel), toothpaste with a complex of vitamins A, E and B5 and mastic acid that absorbs that cause tooth decay, but also Ouloaction, toothpaste against dental plaque and tartar.
